American actress Anne Heche has been taken off life support and died. Her family confirmed this to the British newspaper The Guardian on Friday evening. Heche suffered severe brain damage in a car accident last week and has been in a coma ever since. Heche was 53 years old.
The family thanked everyone for their well wishes and for the good care at the hospital where she was staying. “Anne will be remembered for her brave honesty and her light will be missed,” the statement read.
Heche was seriously injured last week when her car crashed into a home in Los Angeles. The actress suffered burns all over her body and had to be put on life support immediately. Police reported that traces of narcotics were found in her blood.
Earlier it was said that her situation was stable, but during the night of Monday to Tuesday a spokesperson announced that Heche was in a coma. Friday it became clear that she would not come out of it either.
The Dutch public heard little of Heche in recent years. In the nineties she became known through the soap opera Another World. After that she played in the movies Donnie Brasco and series like Ally McBeal and Nip/Tuck. This year the actress played in a television series and a film. Heche also became known for her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres. Heche leaves behind two sons.
